North Olmsted’s history began in 1815 with David Johnson Stearns of Vermont. He was followed by other pioneers from New England who established a settlement in the wilderness of southwestern Cuyahoga County. The book primarily deals with the period from 1815 to 1940. North Olmsted went from being an isolated farming community to a village in 1909 and a city in 1951. The history of North Olmsted is a story of people as the photographs in the book illustrate. Arcadia published the book which has 219 images and 127 pages.
A long time resident of North Olmsted, I taught social studies for 31 years before retiring in 1999. My degrees are from Kent State University (BS) and Case Western Reserve University (MA). I have been a consultant for the Western Reserve Historical Society and a grader for the College Board. A former historian of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable, I serve today on the North Olmsted Landmarks Commission. As a director and the archivist for the Olmsted Historical Society, I had access to the files and photographs which form the basis of the book.
